Oh My Darlin' Clement Tine

You know how you visit an animal shelter absolutely determined just to look, and next thing you know you've got a rowdy, yappy puppy bouncing off your walls? That happens at fish stores, too. (Except for the yapping part. And the puppy part.)

I confess! Yesterday I got a new fish from Asia, even though I swore I wouldn't. Meet Mr. Clement Tine (aka Clem N. Tine):

In my defense, the fish in question came from a very good LFS (local fish store), and every one of the 10 or so Chinese imports in that tank appeared to be in exceptionally excellent health. I've been anxious to get a replacement Ilsa for The Ugly Guppy, so I took a bold leap into the murky, murky depths of New Fishdom.

This little guy is a very agile swimmer. He'll be good at athletic hoop tricks. He is a lionhead (straight back) and not a ranchu (humpback) like my previous Ilsas, but that won't be obvious on film. He is not red and white like my ranchus, but yellowy orange all over (rather like a Clementine orange). But he's still believable as Ilsa; after all, actors often change costumes during the course of a movie.

I am still hoping to get a ranchu from an American breeder. If that happens, I'll keep the ranchu and lionhead in separate tanks. That way, I can simultaneously train each for a specific scene in my show &mdash one to do circus tricks and the other to play soccer. And if one gets sick, the other has less chance of catching it. I don't want to lose two Ilsas at the same time again!

It's always fun to start shaping a little fish mind. Clem is catching on quickly to the feeding wand, and I have no doubt that he will make a great actor. Polish up that Oscar; The Ugly Guppy is back in production!
